Metalwork Lab
Grades 6 – 12 · Metal Fabrication & Machining · Hands-On Engineering
Gedee Public School’s Metalwork Lab is a first-of-its-kind facility in the region — a hands-on programme for students in Grades 6 to 12 that combines engineering theory with supervised workshop practice. Rooted in Sri G. D. Naidu’s founding belief that education must be experienced through doing, the lab gives every GDPS student real exposure to metal fabrication and machining in a safe, structured, and professionally equipped environment.
Programme Topics
- Safety Protocols & Shop Safety
- Benchwork with Metals
- Hand Tools & Measuring Instruments
- Metallurgy & Material Properties
- Heat Treatment of Metals
- Lathe Operation
- Arc Welding (SMAW) & TIG Welding (GTAW)
Facilities & Equipment
- Bench lathes & drill presses
- Arc and TIG welding stations
- Heat treatment area
- Precision measuring instruments
- Full hand tool sets at every bench
- PPE at every station; first-aid post
All equipment regularly inspected and maintained to professional standards.
Learning Goals
- Safely handle tools, measure, cut, shape, drill, tap, and join metal components
- Understand metallurgy: steel alloys, material selection, and heat treatment theory and practice
- Use measuring instruments and machine tools to produce parts to specification
- Develop precision, patience, and professional work habits that transfer across every discipline
The Metalwork Lab offers a safe, stimulating environment where students discover the satisfaction of making things with precision — and develop habits of safety and technical confidence that will serve them long into the future.
